Optimizing October: Finding Balance On and Off the Mat

As we welcome the first week of autumn, I can’t help but reflect on the changing seasons. While I mourn the longer days and the warmth of summer, I truly embrace the cooler, crisp air that fall brings. This past weekend was a perfect example of early fall weather, and it inspires me to think about life, wellness, and my personal goals.


Each season offers us a chance to pause and reset, much like we do in our yoga practice. As we move from summer into fall, it’s a reminder to find balance—on and off the mat. Rather than focusing on new beginnings, I’m choosing to optimize different aspects of my life this October. In yoga, we flow through postures to create harmony between strength and stillness, and this month, I’m applying that same principle to my daily routine.


Here are the areas I’m focusing on optimizing:


  • Sleep - Just like savasana helps restore the body at the end of practice, I’m aiming to give my body the rest it needs by getting 8 hours of sleep each night. This has been a challenge for me!

  • Fitness -In addition to yoga, strength training is a key part of building both physical and mental resilience. Getting back into the habit of adding weight training to my schedule is a priority.

  • Health -Yoga encourages mindfulness, not just in movement but in nourishment. I’m committing to being more mindful of what I eat, this is code for taming the sweet tooth!

  • Space (physical and mental) - Just like in yoga when we create space in the body by opening up through a stretch or finding length in a pose, I’m optimizing the clearing of clutter in my home and my mind. It helps me feel less scattered and gives me room to breathe, think, and move through life with more ease.


I encourage you to think about how you can optimize your own wellness this October. Whether it’s through improving sleep, adding more movement, or creating space for peace, small changes can make a big impact.
